Resurrection of the Ninth Floor

October 18th, 2023

The Eaton department store on Sainte-Catherine Street went bankrupt in 1999, leading to the closure of its famous Art Deco restaurant on the 9th floor. The restaurant, built in 1931, was classified as a heritage building in 2000, protecting from demolition its decor and furniture inspired by the Île-de-France ocean liner. The current owner, Ivanhoé Cambridge, has announced that the place will finally reopen to the public before the end of 2023. From a restaurant which at one time had 500 seats, the place is in the process of transforming into a restaurant with a venue for shows, exhibitions, and private events.
