For the next few weeks at least, many of our daily habits will be altered by the COVID-19 pandemic. Schools are closed, along with public recreational facilities like libraries and pools; sports and art performances have been cancelled; and those who can do so are working from home. Montrealers have been called upon to avoid gathering in large numbers, which includes modifying our schedules to avoid the usual rush-hour lineups for food shopping and dining. A city the size of Montreal provides certain around-the-clock services that are especially useful in these exceptional circumstances. This week, we present a list of food businesses and pharmacies in the downtown area that stay open 24 hours.

La Main Supermarket
Your neighbourhood’s 24-hour corner store sells snacks and possibly cereal, but they will not do when it’s time to stock up on fruit and vegetables. La Main Supermarket, located on the Plateau at the northern limit of McGill Ghetto, is a convenient stop when crossing the city north-south along Saint-Laurent Boulevard.

Metro Côte-des-Neiges
This Metro chain supermarket sustains its 24-hour schedule partly due to the student population of neighbouring University of Montreal, and because it is located near two major traffic arteries. As a bonus, the Metro supermarket shares the block with a Pharmaprix which is also open 24 hours.

Salerno Bakery & Pastry
In business since 1965, Salerno is an Italian bakery which offers a wide range of products: breads, panini, a variety of pizzas, traditional cakes, artisanal pastries, and cookies, as well as cold cut meats and cheeses. Located in northeast Montreal, they sell directly to the public and also supply several restaurants.

Fairmount Bagel
Fairmount Bagel Bakery was the first bagel maker to open in Montreal, in 1919. It offers 18 varieties of bagels, all kneaded by hand and baked in a wood-fired oven. Six kinds are made with organic, whole wheat flour; salt-free and low-fat varieties are available. They also sell cream cheese, smoked salmon and other accompaniments.
Info: 74 Fairmount Street West | 514 272-0667 | fairmountbagel.com

St-Viateur Bagel
St-Viateur Bagel has developed a small chain of cafes and bakeries around the city, but the original store, open 24 hours, is still located on Saint-Viateur Street near Parc Avenue.

Jean Coutu at Sherbrooke and Parc
The Jean Coutu pharmacy located at the corner of Sherbrooke Street West and du Parc Avenue is open 24 hours. Except for home deliveries and lottery ticket sales, its services are available any time. A pharmacist is on duty at all hours to provide advice and fill prescriptions.
Info: 305 Sherbrooke Street West | 514 285-2646 | jeancoutu.com

Pharmaprix Côte-des-Neiges
This location of Pharmaprix occupies the former Montreal Wax Museum, beside the Côte-des-Neiges Metro supermarket mentioned above. Spread over two floors, this is a particularly large outlet with full service; prescriptions are filled upstairs.

La Banquise
Established over 50 years ago, La Banquise is a legendary all-night destination on the Plateau. Quebec comfort food is served at all hours, including their famous poutines and hearty breakfasts. They also serve a wide selection of microbrewery beers.

Milton B
A 24-hour coffee tradition continues under a new name: known as a Second Cup for 22 years, recently it became Milton B. This casual, urban cafeteria is usually frequented by McGill students.

Dunn’s Famous
Dunn’s is a midnight standby in downtown Montreal: their menu features smoked meat sandwiches, steak, poutine, burgers, and other North American diner classics.

Joe’s Panini
This downtown sandwich shop has a small counter with a few seats, and is most popular with night owls exiting clubs on Crescent Street. Their menu lists a wide variety of sandwiches: grilled chicken, B-L-T, spicy tuna, clubs, burgers, Philly Cheese Steak, and many more, including muffin sandwiches for breakfast.

Miami Deli
In the east end of the city, Miami Deli is a classic North American diner with a funky tropical decor. It serves pizza, pasta, burgers, sandwiches, BBQ chicken, Greek dishes, and Chinese food. Breakfast is offered 24 hours.
